Virtual Libraries

As the worldwide networked information environment expands, those who create, store and provide access to information, from the Library of Congress to businesses, institutions and individuals are putting more and more information into digital form: visual, textual, audio, graphic or video. Libraries are changing from individual, discrete, physical institutions that stored information to collaborative, networked, distributed, integrated and virtual organizations that curate, organize and provide access to information.

In turn, librarianship is also changing. The profession requires individuals who can communicate effectively in multiple formats to educate and assist users of online resources, support student multimedia literacy, collaborate to get things done, and promote democratic access to information. They need an understanding of the issues and players involved, funding available, technologies required, and the skills and strategies needed. At the same time, communication is a two-way street, so libraries must incorporate methods for their members to participate in creating the information environment both physically and virtually. Even the shifts are shifting as we move to libraries and librarians that are virtual and mobile and the emphasis shifts from custodian of artifacts to leadership and innovation through communication.  In this course, you will explore the issues in creating a virtual information environment in schools and build a prototype virtual learning commons to support organized access to information in a variety of formats, curricular units where students collaboratively build knowledge, a site for sharing student participation and production, and a venue for supporting literacy and the love of reading. As you engage in this course, you will
  • Consider the importance of conversations in the collaborative development of knowledge
  • Explore the developing world of digital libraries and librarianship in networked environments
  • Participate in developing a collaborative and customizable library environment
  • Reflect on the interrelated roles of librarians, teachers, students and experts in a world of virtual libraries and virtual learning environment.
